Cryopreservation for Medical Reasons
There are many reasons one might choose to freeze eggs or sperm. Some persons may unfortunately receive a diagnosis of a medical condition that the treatment may destroy or affect the quality of their eggs or sperm (gametes). Treatments for cancer such as chemotherapy, radiation and surgery can significantly reduce one’s fertility potential. In these cases, gamete freezing is a viable option.
We at Caribbean Fertility Center can assist in freezing gametes prior to beginning this treatment. This gives persons undergoing cytotoxic treatment a chance of starting their family afterwards.
What does the process entail?
-
An initial consultation is carried out with the fertility specialist. The relevant investigations and preparations will be made to optimize each patient on a case-by-case basis.
-
Once all the checks are satisfactory, males produce a sperm sample by masturbation which is frozen. Females will undergo a series of hormone injections lasting 8-14 days and a minor procedure to extract the eggs, which are then frozen.
-
The gametes will remain in cryopreservation until the client is ready to start their family.
At CFC, the team strives to provide an opportunity to all persons to achieve their family planning dreams, even after treatment.
